DISEC

United Nations General Assembly First Committee on Disarmament and International Security

The Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC or C1) is the First Committee of the United Nations General Assembly. It is one of six main committees of the General Assembly and deals with disarmament, global challenges and threats to peace within the international community. The Committee meets at an annual basis in October for a 4-5 week session, usually after the General Assembly General Debate. All 193 member states can attend this committee and they work together to discuss solutions to the challenges of international security.

The Committee works closely with the UN Disarmament Commission and the Geneva-based Conference on Disarmament. Sessions are structured into three distinctive stages and cover seven main thematic clusters: conventional weapons, nuclear weapons, other weapons of mass destruction, disarmament machinery, regional disarmament and security, disarmament in outer space and other disarmament measures and international security. In summary, it considers all disarmament and international security matters within the scope of the Charter or if the issue is related to the functions of another organ of the UN.

Fun Fact: DISEC is the only Main Committee of the General Assembly entitled to verbatim records coverage.
