UNHRC

United Nations Human Rights Council

The United Nations Human Rights Council is an inter-governmental body whose mission is to protect and promote human rights around the globe. The Council comprises of 47 member states, which are elected by the United Nations General Assembly. States meet at the UN Head Office in Geneva and come together to address issues of human rights violations and make recommendations. It has the ability to discuss all thematic human rights issues such as the freedom of expression, freedom of association and assembly, rights of racial and ethnic minorities, women's rights and freedom of belief and religion.

The Human Rights Council replaced the former United Nations Commission on Human Rights and was created by the UN General Assembly on 15 March 2006 by resolution 60/251. Its first session took place place from 19 to 30 June 2006. The UNHRC also works closely with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and engages the United Nations special procedures.
